How Sprite Drove More than 2 million Snapchat Views in Just a Few Days

via Digiday

A new campaign for Sprite that puts Snapchat codes on its cans in Brazil has received more than 2 million views in just a few days, according to the agency behind the campaign. The company shipped millions of cans with the Snapchat logo slapped on the side, along with scannable images that act like QR codes that lead consumers to other accounts on the messaging app.
The campaign started with 15 different Snapchat codes printed on cans, connecting to Web celebrities and other local notables. The ad stars are sharing Sprite-related stories on Snapchat, which have now been viewed 2.3 million times in two days, according to the people behind the effort. (View counts on Snapchat do not necessarily reflect total audience, because often the same person watches a clip more than once.)
“Sprite has a young audience in Brazil, a very young audience,” said Felipe Simi of CUBOCC, the agency that helped create the Sprite Snapchat tie-up. “We are talking about Gen Z, not even millennials anymore.”

Brazil to Snapchat: ‘I like the Sprite in you’
If the initial performance is any indication, users should be prepared for a surge in friends.
“Coca-Cola is a really powerful medium in Brazil,” Simi said. “And the can has this huge distribution.”
It might be strange to think of cans as a medium, but that’s what Sprite is doing, considering that 40 percent of the desired young audience isn’t watching TV, Simi said. Snapchat is now reaching close to 200 million people globally, and tens of millions of them visit daily, he said. The youngest generation considers it the No. 1 app for their media consumption, according to his agency’s research.
Almost 500 people have sent their Snapchat codes to Sprite’s website in the past two days, Simi said. The company will decide which accounts get to be printed on actual cans, clearly vetting to limit any scandalous outcomes.
This is not the first time Sprite has leaned on Snapchat for marketing. Its agency, Wieden+Kennedy New York, set up a pop-up retail location in New York this summer, and people nearby were offered special filters to put on their Snapchat photos.
Snapchat is becoming a force in millennial-and-younger marketing, mostly on the back of these special experiences. Some in the ad world are not sold on whether it can scale the idea into a business that demands advertiser money like Facebook does. Also QR codes generally have been a flop in the U.S. after receiving a swell of initial hype years ago, according to ad industry observers.
“Stickers, overlays on photos, and those kinds of custom filter overlays, that’s more interesting,” said one ad agency source with ties to Sprite and Snapchat, who didn’t want to be identified.
Snapchat recently sold its first Sponsored Lens, which is an animated filter, for the movie “Peanuts.“ Users could tap their screens, and the animated lens would pop up on top of their photos to be shared with friends.
The Sprite campaign also relies on Snapchat personalities, just like campaigns often rely on YouTube or Vine celebrities. In this case, Sprite went for accounts run by people and artists popular in Brazil, including PC Siqueira, Pyong Lee the Magic Korean, graffiti artist Chivitz and skater Dwayne Fugundes.
Snapchatters with influence constitute an area that a number of brands see potential in, because they see a way to get their content in front of Snapchat users in a way that is typically less expensive than direct sponsorships.

Sprite Wants Snapchat Users to Get More Friends Via Its Cans

via AdWeek

The soda brand is the latest to dive into a fun Snapchat effort. Sprite
Sprite is inviting Snapchat users in Brazil to put their Snapcodes on millions of its soda cans. Snapcodes are QR codes—two-dimensional barcodes scannable on smartphones—that are designed to help people on the mobile-social platform gain more friends.
The effort, dubbed RFRSH Na Lata (meaning "refresh on the can" when translated from Portuguese), is being pushed with a pair of online videos (one of which appears at the bottom of this post). Consumers can submit their Snapcodes via a microsite through Nov. 27, and the accounts chosen to be featured by the Coca-Cola-owned soda brand will be disclosed on Dec. 3.
Sprite's play underscores how brands are flocking to Snapchat, which has garnered 100 million monthly users even though it's only a few years old. What marketers love about the mobile app is that most of its users are from the coveted millennial or Gen Z demographics.
When explaining the campaign, Coca-Cola Brazil's agency, CUBOCC, cited a study from Acision revealing that 60 percent of Brazilian smartphone users prefer messaging apps for communication.
To kick-start the effort, 15 Snapchat users with big social followings have already gotten their Snapcodes printed on cans. According to CUBOCC, those folks have, on average, tripled their number of friends on the platform in the past two weeks.

Vince Staples Discusses Leadership In Sprite "Obey Your Thirst" Documentary

via Hip Hop DX

The Long Beach, California rapper says why it's important to have a voice.

Vince Staples is featured in Sprite's "Obey Your Thirst" documentary series with Fader. The Long Beach, California rapper talks about being his own leader.

"It gets kinda cluttered when everybody's trying to follow the leader," Staples says, "and the leader doesn't even know where they're going. None of us know where we're going. All you can do is follow that gut feeling."

Staples also discusses his upbringing.

"Nothing's harder than what I had to do growing up," he says. "It's important to have a voice speaking for where I come from because I never had one. Without that voice, all of this is for nothing."

Drake's View from the 6 - Obey Your Thirst

via The Fader

Watch "Drake - Obey  your Thirst (Episode 1)"

At 28, Drake is a superstar—the only guy who could dethrone Taylor Swift on the charts with a mixtape. But he doesn't see top sellers or legends as his rivals. "I’m not worried about these other rappers, I’m not competing with those guys," he says in the above Obey Your Thirst documentary, created by The FADER and Sprite. "I already know their hand, I know their move. I study everything. I’m worried about the kid that’s sitting in his house that wants to be better than me and all those guys. That’s who I’m competing with."
In this rare interview, Drake opens up about emerging from an underdog city, internet culture, and rap's increasingly level playing field. Coming up in Toronto, he explains, people told him to move to New York if he was serious about making it. Instead, he stayed where he was and made history by proving that if you’re a truly "multi-layered" artist, you can make it from anywhere. “Do it the way I did it," he says. "Do it from where you’re at. If you have the music, that's all it takes."
Watch the full documentary above, and stay tuned for three more, sharing the stories of Nas, Vince Staples, and Isaiah Rashad.

Drake Interview With Sprite - Says "Do It The Way I Did"

Drake has made it. There’s no doubt about his level of success. Even now, fans are anxiously awaiting his Views from the 6 album. In a recent documentary, Drizzy says to “do it” the way he did it.
What exactly does he mean? Well, Drake’s from Toronto. It wasn’t exactly the mecca of worldwide music stars at the time — like Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York City, Nashville, etc. Drizzy’s music didn’t become stifled though. He was determined not to allow it’s location be a hindrance to his success.
As Fader mentions, Drake’s performances began in his hometown. Though it’s grown in notoriety, there were humble beginnings.
“Instead of traveling to a larger hub to get hot, he planted his feet and dedicated himself to putting his city on the map. Years later, having achieved that goal, he’s helped rewrite the rulebook of rap success.”
In a collaborative documentary with Sprite and Fader, Drake discusses his thoughts about being successful in the music industry. Aubrey Graham quotes as follows.
“Rap music has always been about story-telling. I’ve never seen the sense in crafting a story that isn’t my own. All I did was find a way to make people proud of our city. Do it the way I did it. Do it from where you at. If you have the music, that’s all it takes.
“Present it to the world, and they’ll tell you if it’s worth their time or not…Just rapping is really not that impressive anymore. There just has to be more. You have to be a multi-layered artist.”
The companies released an extended version of the trailer as well.

However, the full documentary will release on Wednesday, June 24, 2015. It includes Drake, Vince Staples, Nas, and Isaiah Rashad. Will you watch?

Drake, Nas Star In New Sprite Commercial

via Billboard

Drake and Nas co-star in a new commercial for Sprite that debuted during the NBA Finals on Sunday (June 14), marking Drake's first TV ad for the brand in five years.
Set to Drake's "0 To 100," the 30-second spot consists of footage from Drake and Nas' concert for the citrus soda during NBA All-Star Weekend in February at New York's Irving Plaza, and is designed to promote Sprite "Obey Your Verse" -- a newly released line of limited-edition cans featuring 16 classic hip-hop lyrics, including five bars apiece from Drake and Nas. The spot, created with ad agency Wieden + Kennedy, synchs up with one of Drake's cans, which features the "0 To 100" line "Know yourself / know your worth."
Sprite VP Kimberly Paige recently told Billboard that other hip-hop surprises are in store for the "Obey Your Verse" campaign this summer. "We’re gonna look at everything we do and how to bring it life in the marketplace, which will unfold over the next couple of weeks," she said.
Though it remains an active sponsor of the NBA and several other key TV events throughout the year, Sprite was a relatively modest marketer in 2014. The brand spent a little over $10 million on measured media, according to Kantar Media.

Sprite Taps Wieden & Kennedy for Creative Duties

via AdAge

Wieden & Kennedy's New York office is picking up creative duties for Sprite, Ad Age has learned.
Sprite had been working with Translation, a piece of business won in September 2013. Prior to that Leo Burnett handled creative, but Sprite has worked with a number of other agencies -- BBH and Johannes Leonardo, for instance -- over the years.
According to people familiar with the matter, the pitch, which was conducted without a consultant, came down to Wieden and Interpublic's R/GA. Both agencies declined to comment. A representative for Sprite also declined to comment.
For Wieden, the Sprite work is an addition to its Coca-Cola portfolio, as the brand handles Coke as well as Powerade. It's also the latest win in a stream of account activity for the indie agency. In late March, the same month it parted ways with Weight Watchers, Wieden & Kennedy's Portland, Ore., office made its way onto theGeneral Mills roster by picking up creative for Yoplait. Wieden in February picked up the KFC account without a review, just a couple weeks after Verizon enlisted the shop for brand and strategy work.
Coca-Cola Co. had also been recently looking into a potential digital agency change for Sprite, according to people familiar with the matter. Meanwhile, sibling brand Coke in March reached out to 10 agencies, including Wieden & Kennedy, to pitch ideas for its next global campaign.
Translation last fall created a Sprite ad (above) starring LeBron James about the return to his hometown of Akron, Ohio, to play for the Cleveland Cavaliers, the team on which he began his career.
Coca-Cola spends relatively little on Sprite compared to other brands like Diet Coke and Coke. In 2014, the company spent about $13.6 million on U.S. measured media, according to Kantar Media, though that is up from $7.1 million in 2013. According to Ad Age DataCenter's analysis of Kantar figures, Coke spent about $202.1 million in 2013 on U.S. measured media.

via CSPnet

New name, packaging announce LTO's return

ATLANTA -- Coca-Cola Co. has brought back Sprite 6 Mix by LeBron James with a new name a new packaging.
The NBA superstar's limited-edition Sprite flavor has evolved into Sprite LeBron’s Mix.
Formulated in collaboration with James and first introduced in 2014, the LTO combines the refreshing taste of traditional Sprite with a splash of natural cherry and orange flavors. The new packaging features a bold red color base with James' initials in the background. Crown iconography and dashes of gold symbolize the NBA star's most popular nickname: King James.

Sprite Hits a Sweet Spot With LeBron James' Surprise 'First Home Game'

via Creativity

Sprite today debuted this heartwarming 90-second spot featuring NBA star LeBron "King" James' return to his hometown of Akron, Ohio. The ad was shot on Sept. 25, a couple months after James announced he would be leaving the Miami Heat to rejoin the team he began his career with, the Cleveland Cavaliers.
We see James in a car being driven through the city he grew up in; the footage is intercut with clips of Akronites, young and old, speculating about how awesome his first home game will be. Indie rock band Imagine Dragons' uplifting song "I Bet My Life" backs the spot, hitting its crescendo just as James meets smiling local fans in the city's Patterson Park where Sprite has restored two outdoor basketball courts. Just before James joins a pick-up game in progress, we hear him in voice-over: "This is my first home game."
A 30-second version of the spot will air on TNT during the Cavaliers' first game of the season later this month. Sprite has also created commemorative 12-ounce cans featuring James' likeness that are available in Ohio stores.
